Petroleum Engineering deals with the exploration, drilling and production of petroleum. It also caters for technical as well as management aspects of petroleum as an upstream end of the energy sector. Upstream refers to the petroleum deposits buried deep beneath the earth’s surface and its supply to the consumers as a river supplies to the ocean. The multidimensional topics covered under petroleum engineering are closely related to the earth sciences. These include economics, geology, geochemistry, geomechanics, geophysics, oil drilling, geopolitics, knowledge management, seismology, team building, team work, tectonics, thermodynamics, well logging, well completion, oil and gas production, reservoir development, and pipe lining.
Career Prospects
There are vast career opportunities for Petroleum Engineers whether they work with drilling equipment, on production facilities, with computer models of reservoirs, or with sophisticated instrumentation & control equipment. Petroleum technologist also work as Hydrocarbon mud loggers, Gas Plant Operator (junior operators, Unit operators, senior operators), Oil and Gas Well Loggers and Testers, Well Testing Services Supervisor, Wire line Field Supervisor (Electric lines, Slick lines), Chemical Engineer (research and development, process design, plant operations), Petroleum Engineer, Geo technical Engineer, Seismic Observer, Service Equipment Operator, Swabbing Unit Operators, Rig Technician (Coil tubing operators, Completion/service tool operators, Fishing tool operators, Power tong operators), Drilling Rig (Lease hands, Floor hands), Geographer, Drill stem, Oil Pipeline Operators and Maintenance Workers, Refinery Process Operator, Drilling and Service Rig Managers, Oil and Gas Transportation Swampers and Operators, Pulp mill Operator, Oil and Gas Transportation Swampers and Operators and Petroleum Geologist.
Higher Education
Also students will be eligible for BSc, BE and B. Tech. degrees in the relevant fields from reputed universities (Government & Private sectors) all around the globe.
